In his career, he focuses his research on the pathogenesis and mechanisms of addiction. He received his PhD in 1997, defending his thesis on the mechanisms of development of alcoholic mayhem. His research on the relationship of suicidal tendencies, impulsivity and relapse to drinking in the context of a genetic predisposition to alcohol dependence formed the basis of his habilitation thesis, defended in 2007.
He is the author of numerous scientific publications that have appeared in prestigious Polish and international journals. He has participated in numerous conferences and congresses, where he presented the results of his research. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Polish Psychiatric Association, founder and long-time president of the Polish Society for Addiction Research and vice-president of the European Society for Biomedical Research on Alcoholism (ESBRA).
