Proper sleep in children

An adequate amount of uninterrupted sleep is important for the proper development of children – from newborns to teenagers. A healthy night’s rest is the key to good functioning of the body. During sleep, the nervous system regenerates and the immune system manifests optimal activity. It is also when the child’s brain learns, processes and organizes information accumulated during the day or fixes connections between neurotransmitters, which has a positive effect on remembering information. Growth hormone is also secreted during sleep.

The optimal amount of sleep in children:

  • 1-3 years – 12-14 hours,
  • 3-6 years – 11-12 hours,
  • 6-12 years – 10-11 hours,
  • 12 years and older – 8-9 hours.

Disturbances in nighttime rest have many consequences. Among other things, abnormalities in a child’s growth and development can occur. As a result of irregular and too-short sleep, the level of the stress hormone increases, while the amount of melatonin in the body decreases. Children with sleep disorders may have problems concentrating or remembering. It is not uncommon for them to also be irritable. Sleep disorders also adversely affect blood sugar levels, increasing the risk of becoming overweight. Even one sleepless night makes a child more susceptible to “catching” an infection.

Consultation of sleep disorders in children is important in the perspective of their further normal development. This is because they may result from abnormalities in the course of sleep itself, but also may be a symptom of diseases of other systems. Therefore, for the sake of the well-being and health of young patients, it is worthwhile to consult a specialist about worrying symptoms.

How to prepare for the visit?

Consultation of sleep disorders in children is not burdensome for patients and their parents. At Neurosphera, it is handled by a clinical specialist – a pediatrician. During the visit, a detailed history of the child’s behavior both at night and during the day will be taken. Therefore, prepare in advance a sleep diary covering at least 5 days (including school days and days off) and record at home any disturbing episodes occurring at night.

If possible, scan and save all documents in your Neuroterminal patient account. This way, you won’t have to bring a paper version of the documents with you to your in-patient visit, and your doctor will be able to review the selected documentation during your online visit.

After consultation, the specialist will assess whether the problem is due to the child’s physiology or not. If a sleep disorder is found, there are two possible courses of action. The doctor will offer treatment or make a referral to a psychiatrist, who will thoroughly address the problem underlying the diagnosed abnormality.
